July 18, 2011

By far the cutest couple to date that have graced the front end of our cameras, Larry and Louise braved the heat and humidity for a session with their devoted mom, Marina.   Just how devoted was she?  Marina brought along a doggie goodie  bag with bowls and water and the kids breaked often for refreshment.  Marina, who works for a local dentist, was recently married at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and enjoyed a reception at the Shorter Mansion  in the historic city of Eufaula, Alabama.

Drumroll please…the winner of the free engagement session given away at the Weddings of Georgia bridal show last weekend is Kendahl Plunkett!  Kendahl, I’ll be in touch!

All You Need to Know About the Dress Part III – an Interview with Gabrielle’s Formals in Opelika, Alabama

JW:  I understand that a couple of the first things a girl does when she gets engaged is buy a bridal magazine and begin looking at dresses.  Could you tell us what the trendiest brides this 2011/2012 season will be wearing?

GF:  Many of the designers this season are going with ruffles and lace.  We have found that most of our brides are looking toward long bodice styles with lots and lots of ruffles.  Beading and rhinestones this season are more prevalent on the bodice and less on the skirting.  A-line gowns still rank #1 while we still have brides looking at your more traditional ball gown designs.

JW:  How should a bride determine what style dress to choose from?  Are there certain guidelines that determine who can wear what?

GF:  We recommend that our brides always keep an open mind and don’t be afraid to try on several different styles when choosing their bridal gown. Taking someone with you whose advice you trust is always a good idea.

Basically there are five traditional wedding dress shapes. These are Sheath, A-line or Princess, Empire Line, Traditional Ball Gown, and Mermaid or FishTail dresses:

1) Sheath dresses are simple, close-fitting and normally unstructured, with most coming in soft, flowing fabrics like georgette, chiffon and crepe. This style is suited best for the tall slim bride.

2) The A-line or Princess has fitted vertical seams running from the shoulders down to a flared skirt creating the “A” shape. We find that brides wanting to hide broader hips while accenting small waists are suited best for this style.

3) An empire line gown has a high waistline focusing just beneath the bust. This usually enhances the smaller busted brides and makes the petite brides look taller.

4) A traditional ball gown has a fitted bodice and a full floor length skirt.  This style is best suited for the brides with a slim waistline and is great for hiding full hips.

5) And becoming more and more popular are the mermaid or fishtail style.  These are the narrow fitted dress with flared hems. This style seems to work best for making petite brides look taller while giving the tall slim brides more curves.
JW:  I’m sure that in today’s economy a prominent factor in choosing a gown is the price.  What is the average price that a bride can expect to spend on a well made, attractive gown and are there any ways to save money?

GF:  We find that we can work within anyone’s budget to find out brides their perfect gown without taking out a second mortgage. While there are more expensive gowns on the market today, our average price for a new wedding gown ranges from $189 – $599. One of the ways our brides save money is by renting their gown or by purchasing one of our many resale gowns. Yes, Gabrielle’s even offers wedding gowns for rent and resale.

JW:  How far in advance should a bride purchase her gown and what is the time line for delivery of the gown after final alterations?

GF: We have several gowns in stock and most of our designers keep a large selection in stock so most are available within a week. However if a gown is to be custom ordered it may take as long as 8 to 10 weeks sometimes even 12 to 14 weeks.  We recommend that we hold off on alterations until 2 weeks prior to the wedding date to make sure all alterations are perfect. We also will store at no charge our bride’s gown for them until the day before or the day of the wedding and make sure that it is steamed and ready for that big day.

JW:  Gabrielle’s is a beautiful store and appears to have a great selection.  Can you tell me what other products you offer in addition to bridal gowns?

GF: You could say that Gabrielle’s is your “One Stop Shop” for all your bridal needs. We offer engagements announcements, bridal invitations, floral bouquets of all types, centerpieces, garters, Tuxedos, flower girl dresses and baskets, Bridesmaid Dresses, Mother of the Bride & Groom Dresses, jewelry, tiaras, veils, undergarments, shoes.   We also carry gowns of all types to include Prom, Pageant, Homecoming, and Ball Gowns and have one of the largest in stock inventories of Little Girl Pageant Gowns.  We also offer rentals on pageant gowns, interview outfits and talents costumes.

JW; Do you alter gowns?

GF:  Yes, we have been blessed with two Master Seamstresses who do all of our alterations. We pride ourselves in being one of the only bridal shops in the area that offer customizing on any formal wear, which can be as extensive as a custom made gown to simply having your gown customized to your specifications. Also, any items purchased at other bridal & formal shops can be altered here at Gabrielle’s and our prices cannot be matched.

JW:  Have you begun to see any influence from Princess Kate’s wedding on any of the newest gowns or accessories?

GF:  Princess Kate’s dress was simple and elegant, which I believe will set the note for many brides to come.  Sometimes simple is more beautiful, as Princess Kate demonstrated.
